The 1990s were active, to say the least. The Pineland in 1990 was fully in a maintenance phase and the property was so unique that we were registered with The Nature Conservancy. We had had our 4th prescribed burn on 7/26/1990 and 8/23/1990 - this one conducted by The Nature Conservancy.
Hurricane Andrew hit at 4:30 AM 8/24/1992 with winds up to 300 mph (485 km/hr) and 3 tornadoes that we know of cutting through the pineland. We lost 3,500 Pinus eliottii var. densa "South Dade Slash Pine" aging from 125 years old to possibly 1,000 years old or more. The remainder of the pines died from the IPS beetle infestation that followed the hurricane wind damage.
